Here’s a set of pix from an event led by Andy Weeds last October. I have an interview with him which I will add once I’ve cracked how to post it.
For the local Mind & Body fair to which Open Blue was invited, Andy constructed a three panel exhibit which focused on the olive as a symbol of God’s Spirit and his healing power. We gave away small bowls of olives at the door and offered prayer on the stand or at the bus which was parked close to the main entrance to the venue. Some people did receive prayer with or without anointing with oil and many were willing to chat We spent a good time talking to the Reiki practicioner opposite who offered advice in between her sessions. It became fairly clear that the spiritual dynamics behind what she was doing was not a big issue. It was meant to be a relaxing therapy rather than a spiritual experience. One piece of advice we did get was that we had not set out our stand clearly enough. The offer of prayer was not clear and there was no suggestion of how it might be done. Next time, we need a sign which says, ‘Christian Healing Prayer’, a comfortable chair and some photos of the process.
We set up the upper deck of the bus as a lounge with some music, a reflective powerpoint on the flat screens more often used for playing PS2 games and some resources for reflection. Durimg the day a small number of people took advantage of this space and commented on its benefits to them, particularly the idea of creating sacred space on a bus! Some people just talked over coffee.
As takeaways the team developed and offered a card with a blessing (see below). The text on the back was from the message (Mt 11:28-30). Everyone who got a pot of olives also received a ‘business’ card and a little explanation. For two thousand years Christians have used olive oil as a symbol of light and healing. Visit us at the stand or on the Open Blue Bus (outside) to experience the power of prayer. A telephone contact number was provided.
By next time we expect to be able to offer details of our storytelling website which is being developed. www.onelifesofar.org.uk
